Current mood: gloomy

tomato + fish DNA = doom
I went to see The Future of Food* tonight. Like most movies aimed at compelling one to action, it mostly made me feel helpless.** It successfully brainwashed convinced me that genetically modified food and the industry behind it are pure evil. I recommend watching it.

I miss Maureen terribly.

Samson III needs a bath but I am too tired to give him one. It's details like this that make me realize I'm not ready for the responsibility of kids. That, combined with the impending sense of doom brought on by watching documentaries, is almost enough to make a girl get her tubes tied.

*If you chose to visit the link, be warned that, unlike the movie, the trailer sucks

**Seriously, I was slightly traumatized by An Inconvenient Truth. It's strange to me that people loved that movie so much...I mean, it was fine, but there are better documentaries out there. I thought it was about 30-45 minutes longer than it needed to be...no wonder my spirit was crushed by the end. Also, I find "inconvenient" an exceedingly difficult word to spell. I am willing to forgive that, though, as the title has a nice ring to it.

The Future of Food is a good documentary. Voices of Opposition screened it here in Tucson. If you need to watch a more optimistic documentary about food politics, The Power of Community has a nice story about converting to organic farming, water harvesting, and urban gardening.

I will have to remember to look for it. There are definitely signs of positive change (e.g. significant increase in organic food sales, more farmers' markets), but the staggering amount of money involved in genetically altered food is what worries me so much... people do horrible things for money.

whenever i watch a flick that gets me down, i watch something mindless and fun shortly after. for instance, after watching a slew of Holocaust themed documentaries, i often found it refreshing to watch a movie like priscilla queen of the desert.

also, a fun documentary to watch is Spellbound.

You would probably like Word Play too. Tonight I watched That 70's Show and South Park reruns and my brain feels more subdued.

Oh, Allison, I'm sorry that Maureen is still gone. I imagine that it would suck, a lot, to have to be without her for 6 whole weeks. Try to cheer up, though, for I shall return in just over a week! I'm moving into my apartment (1316 Vermont, not yelling distance from you and Maureen, as I had so hoped, but still close!) And I shall entertain you endlessly until Maureen's return from Indiana! The other day I was telling my roommate how cool you are, because we were watching Arrested Development, and about how you released the piggies into your hallway but you said that they made like 500 turds in like 30 seconds, and it made me so excited to hang out with you!

Do you remember the video of the monkey washing a cat? I found a clip that briefly shows the chimp carrying the monkey to the basin, and then a longer loop of him scrubbing. Sadly, the background music isn't nearly as good. Still, I was very excited to discover extended footage of one of my favorite videos of all time. I am even more excited about your return!!!

I agree with your assessment of Gore's film.

I'm sorry you and Maureen can't be together. *hugs*

I'm glad to hear it. Sometimes I feel like the only one who didn't "get it" or something. I guess Maureen demonstrated solidarity when she literally fell asleep for part of the movie. She pointed out today that she's reaching the point where she will have fewer days left in Bloomington than she has been there. I just re-read what I wrote, and realized that last sentence could have been significantly compacted and clarified by using the phrase "half-way point." Anyway, I'm glad she'll be home within the month! :)

I had very similar thoughts this morning when I left for work and realized I didn't feed my rabbit. I mean, he can survive the morning without his fresh greens. But what kind of bunny-mommy am I that I forget to FEED him? Jeez.

Most human kids are better at reminding you to feed them. Getting them to eat fresh greens is a whole other story though...
